But what's the correct defence? Can I do this myself? I'm a mum of 3, so this terrifies me, and the extra potential court costs alone are beyond my ability to pay!?0

Oh yes it has! LOADS of times!
I am shocked you are now making this OP waver when the above advice was simple and they were genuine customers who can certainly appeal late.
MOJ go back to my post #6 and DO IT. You don't have to prove anything and if you have a receipt to show them then they'll cancel anyway (appeal even if NOT).PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

The whole show is a scam of every increasing cost, hoping you buckle under.
Just a point before we go any further, were you the driver, have a good think, could ....someone else you know... have been driving, for if you they were and you name this person they have to re-set the clock and pursue the actual driver.Be happy...;)0 -

I used the thread response to a PE letter before CC action and have not heard anything further from them (yet)0 -
Sent an online appeal in the day after posting this, with a copy of my bank statement and copy of the original appeal letter I had written. Totally expected to be rejected and have to follow the longer LBCCC route but PE have just sent me an email to say the charge has been cancelled!!! I'm crying in joy and shock! Thank you coupon mad for encouraging me to late appeal!
