PIP / Carer Allowance

Hi,

I just need some advise. My friend is looking after a disbaled women and she is paying my friend £40pw. When she applied for PIP she put down my friends details as a carer and all money from DWP is paid into the disabled women's accounts.

On Gov.uk website it says carer allowance is £59.75pw but she has been receiving £40pw. Will it be safe to let Tax Credits know that she gets £40pw for looking after someone?

Thanks
MS

Usually carer's allowance is actually paid to the carer, not the disabled benefit claimant. This is why your friend isn't getting the full amount as the benefit claimant is paying her a carer's 'wage' out of the benefits she receives.

Does the disabled benefit claimant live alone? Only if she does she will be receiving a disability premium & when somebody claims carer's allowance for looking after you, you lose the disability premium.

If your friend is looking after the disabled woman for the required 35 hrs a week that is required for claiming carer's allowance to be paid, then it's rather unfair that your friend is only being paid £40 week for so many hours of caring.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Your friend has a private arrangement with the woman she cares for.

If she wants to claim Carers Allowance, she has to apply for it - not the person being cared for.

This is correct, but you should also know that if your friend claims Carer's Allowance it could affect benefits that the disabled person is receiving.

But if the disabled person is already paying £40 from her benefits to the carer, the loss won't be very much.
