Morning all,
D.D is going to secondary school come September,I'm under the assumption that a lot of her work will be computer based. We have a P.C but don't want it being hogged all the time by one user.I thought of a laptop but seem outvoted and others want an IPad.
We will have a budget of £300-£350 so top of the range in either wont be an option,I'll appreciate any advice.

Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.

windows-based laptop wins all the way - you can't type an essay on a pad of any description, for instance
Plus, the interoperability and compatibility of MS Office, for example, will mean stuff she does at home and at school can be easily transferred between the two.... no-brainer question in my book
look for a refurb lappy with Windows 7 on it, should be more than capable and well under your budget. Can you buy Office cheap through either your workplace (MS Home Worker scheme, most big employers are members and means you can get office for a stupidly-cheap £20 with the installation DVD) or the school maybe?......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

I would personally go for this one and i would have to agree 100% that a tablet/ipad you cannot type essays on them!:beer:In My 'Permanant' Pre-Masters Gap Year

Yeah you can. You can get bluetooth keyboards for them, and use Pages on the iPad (don't let anyone tell you Word's essential: my children are just finishing EPQs and A2 course work here, in an Windows/Office-free house). I'm seeing an increasing number of people using iPad/keyboard combinations on campus, especially in humanities (in STEM you're more likely to need LaTeX or some other equation-setting package, which is trickier on an iPad).0 -
