Two X boxes

Hi
My son has an old X box and has now just treated himself to the new X box one.
I've told him he should put the old one on ebay or pass it on to one of his cousins. He seems to think he shouldn't part with it just yet because quite a few of his friends haven't got the X box 1 yet and that he won't be able to play certain games.
Is this correct? Seems odd to me, why would they bring out a new system if it meant you couldn't play old games or hook up with your friends?
Many thanks

That's correct XBOX and XBOX 360 games aren't compatible with the new XBOX One.
It's basically because the One uses a Blu-ray drive, wheras the 360 had an HDDVD drive.
Plus the processors are incompatible.0 -

Thanks. That is incredible - I can't believe the designers make things so difficult.
More blooming clutter for the house!!
Thanks for the info.0 -
That's MS for you.
He needs both systems if he wants to keep his current friends.0 -

They want you to buy the games you already own on the XBOX again for the XBOX1, that's if the do those games for the new XBOX.
It's probably cheaper to keep the old XBOX than replace the games!
Also as more people buy the XBOX1 there will, no doubt, be loads of older machines for sale which will drive the price down.
When the 360 came out I got an original XBOX for pennies to use as a media server and other projects. It's still going strong. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
Neither the XBone or PS4 are compatible with games for the earlier versions. This is unfortunate but there are good reasons for it. We want the new consoles to have more power so they have to move to newer technology which is incompatible with the old, it was also would cost a lot for Microsoft and Sony to pay for the license to the various companies that own the hardware in the older machines as well as those that have hardware in the new machines. You could either cut off the old stuff or take the Nintendo approach and hold back on progress, I suppose a third option would be to include the 360 into the XBone and increase the price by a few hundred.0

My son uses both since he got the Xbox One, he said there are not many games out yet for the Xbox one so he goes back onto his old Xbox to play other games. I also thought the Xbox One would have been compatible with the older games.0

Why would they make it backwards compatible when people like your son may wish to play Call Of Duty online, some mates have the One, some have the 360, so he may pay for 2 copies of the game to play online on both consoles? All they care about is profits..
The Xbox 360 wasnt backwards compatible to the orginal Xbox, and the PS3 was to the PS2, but only for a short period of time.
I did speak to a gent in Birmingham Bullring's Game store 2 weeks back who told me that Sony will release a service where you can download and play PS3 games on the PS4, but he didnt know if Xbox were doing anything similar.0 -
Actually I saved money when buying games for both consoles - it cost me about £50 for COD Ghosts that can be on 2 xbox 360's and Xboxones at the same time..
I.e. Bought as online code for the 360, dloaded as my profiles on sons xb0x 360, then dloaded on my console as me.. Then when xboxone came, is installed it as my profile on his console (where it shows as my main console & shared), then installed on my console as a 'guest' one..
This is what I then do with new releases of thief & titanfall.. buy the £50 credit online cdkeys etc(where its cheaper), then we can both play for cost of one game..
To be fair I only want to play Xbox one games on the xbox one,its already shocking to see the difference in graphics in the systems so Im not really interested in the 360 games..Why would they make it backwards compatible when people like your son may wish to play Call Of Duty online, some mates have the One, some have the 360, so he may pay for 2 copies of the game to play online on both consoles? Thanks for the info.
Its not designers its accountants. It cost more money to add back ward combatibilty and it also means you can resell "classic" 360 games on the new system so more profit there.0 -
