Car Insurance

Does anyone offer a policy which just provides a few weeks minimal RTA cover to enable a buyer to test drive cars they don't already own?

Without the actual vehicles details it would be hard for them to put a risk value on you.

Are you test driving £300 bangers or £200,000+ supercars. They would have to assume the worst and quote silly numbers.

In your situation buying from a dealer maybe the best option. You will be covered by their insurance.

Ive had dealers stick trade plates on and give me the keys to go and test drive it by myself.
I did wonder if they wanted me to steal it though.

  • A lot of so called "dealers" are just people working from home, possibly just for pin money, I very much doubt if many of those are properly insured.

Most policies have a clause providing third party cover on any car not belonging to you, without any ifs and buts about the value of it.

Yes DOC extension wont mention the value of the car. Good reason for that its 3rd party only so the cars value wont make any difference. Your insurance wont be paying out for it.

Its possible to trade from home 1 car at a time and have insurance to cover test drives by potential buyers.

My mate was a mobile mechanic and had cover that extended to customers using his car whilst he repaired theirs.

Not all traders have standard private insurance or none at all.

It is not expensive because it's compulsory.

My comprehensive cover is only around £200 this year which is probably the lowest I've ever paid for comprehensive cover.
And that's with a couple of no-claim incidents on record.

It is expensive for some people who are statistically more likely to have an accident, because the costs of each accident are much higher due to greedy credit hire firms, ambulance chasing lawyers, fake whiplash claims, fraudulent claims, and uninsured drivers. Thankfully something is being done on many of these fronts which is why costs have fallen in the past year.

The best way to get cheaper insurance over time is simply not to have any accidents (at fault or otherwise) and keep your licence clean. Obvious but still true.

I am not claiming any special skills but it IS possible (by modifying your own driving) to significantly reduce the risk of being involved in an accident which wasn't your fault.

BTW it's not compulsory. If you deposit £500k with the court, you don't need RTA insurance at all!

    Yes.

Although it may have to be Comprehensive rather than TPO, which is just as well anyway, in these circumstances.

I'm sure a seller wouldn't mind telling a prospective buyer the reg. no. of the car so that a policy could be arranged.

It's not exactly a secret is it? It's written on a large reflective plastic plate at both ends of the car :rotfl:
