A good point, I suppose if it's running on an older Pentium 4 or Celeron then it might run slow regardless of memory.

Anything with a core2duo CPU and 2GB ram should run W7 quite well.

Hi, it is dual core - I think it's E6300. I noticed in task manager the physical memory was running at 40+ and sometimes it shoots up to 70. Other users of my pc are convinced it's slower on the progs they use. One in particular had been moaning that google maps doesn't load properly and isn't working as well or as fast as on XP. I can't say I've noticed a difference but it does sound like it's working harder if that makes sense. When nothing's running it sounds like it is.

    ram isn't the problem.

if the cpu fan is going full pelt, limit the speed or choose power saver in power saving.

after that, look at what software is running, and your internet speed

Win7 uses memory differently to XP and so you can't necessarily go by what is showing in Task Manager - it'll allocate memory and give the impression it's using it all up when in reality it isn't.....an E6300 with 2GB ram should run Win7 quite well.

Some reasons why it may not be running too well could include: Not installing up to date motherboard/chipset drivers or graphics drivers, other drivers may need updating rather than using Win7's built in ones. Are there any exclamation marks in Device Manager (indicating missing hardware drivers) Too many startup items, maybe you've got Google updates, adobe updates, Chrome updates, McAfee, Norton, toolbars and lord knows what else possibly all starting up when maybe they're not all needed.

The fan running full pelt may indicate the PC is full of dust so might want a blast with an air aerosol. - It could indicate a virus or malware running, so check with antivirus AND malwarebytes free software

There are many guides to tweaking Win7 for better performance so worth a look. eg http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/10-things/10-ways-to-speed-up-windows-7/

I will have a look at all the things you've mentioned but one thing I noticed today and have removed is some spyware. I happened to be looking through my program files and found something called Mega Browse. I have an anti malware program so I ran that and it found. out 27 infected files. The odd thing was I noticed when I was on google that there were ads popping up at the side even though I had blocked pops. They've gone now so it must have been that program.

Be suspicious of further nasties, do some more full scans to be sure. That may well explain the sluggishness of the PC.
