can i drive a hired car on my own insurance?

If I hire a car for a week, can I drive it on my own insurance? And would the hired car need to be insured by hire company? I ask because I hired a car for a week which was damaged. Upon return I paid a large amount of damage excess. I then found out later when there were claims from the accident that the hire company had…

sorry for the late reply.

they did not provide an agreement or receipts, I paid by debit card and got a note for the excess on the hire report 'IN' part.

they accept that they did not have insurance on their hire vehicle. How did they drive it themselves?

i got jugment but they have now applied to set this aside as they say I agreed to use my own insurance and paid the excess for the damage rather than make a claim against myself (this is untrue).

the hearing is soon.
