I currently have (free ver) AVAST on my desktop Win 8
and use the windows default on my win8 laptop (defender)

I got a St Patrick sale offer from AVAST for 3 pc licenses for 1 year for £30 with more benefits. Quite happy to pay £10-5per year per computer to improve online security.

before I buy is AVAST the best software to work with Win 8 or is there a better provider? ( I installed AVAST as the IT chap at my last office recommended it)

The free version of Avast is still a perfectly good piece of software, you don't need to purchase the upgrade version unless you have some kind of delusion that it will protect you better. The Pro version simply has a few more bells and whistles.

That said, there are other free internet security suites available that will do all Avast does at least as well or slightly better.

Visit https://www.av-test.org and check their latest independent test and evaluation reports. Try all of them, not at the same time of course, and see which one you prefer then stick with it as long as it's consistently scoring highly in the tests.

the only thing I don't like with AVAST it seems to block using Windows live mail (Hotmail) so I had to disable the email active monitoring in the settings.
if I change to another AV do I download new first to hard drive then uninstall? I just don't want to leave pc vulnerable in the changeover period.

Yes you download the AV you want to try first. Then uninstall your existing software ideally using that program's official uninstall tool, Avast's is http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Once removed install the replacement by running its install file.

Panda's cloud antivirus has been doing pretty well in recent tests I believe, so that's an option.

But as they say, the best security is between your ears.
