After a PM last night I got caught up googling random things .... which all ended up in dead ends/tempting glimpses at old newspaper pieces .... where I wanted to read the story "just out of intrigue".... but it's a subscription service on Genesreunited.

I'm sure if I had access to loads of newspapers I'd write a compilation of strange/exciting/unusual stories based around single surnames or compile a complete set of events ...

e.g. a man was on his way home on Xmas Eve clutching his children's presents and he came across a fight and tried to stop it and had his throat slit/he died; his father changed jobs at some point and went to work in a prison - and he was murdered while at work (unrelated to son's murder); the sister/daughter of these two men had been ill for some time and died shortly after her father's death.... and I just think there must be a great short snapshot into a family's life around that. I know the original murder victim's wife had 3 kids and was pregnant at the time and she remarried within a couple of years.... but I love the idea of following up all those loose ends around one start point.

And there are thousands of such intriguing stories out there.... if only one had access to all the records easily.

    I've been Money Tipped!
He's just thinking. He's obviously going to be a thinker, look at the rest of his family. He has a thinking face, that's all.

Scrumptious. Bet there is a LOT of kissing going on on that little persons skin!

All set for a potentially difficult discussion with dh, but he said, first thing when off train' before you say anything, I need to say that I've been thinking and I'm not sure it's as great an idea as I first thought....'

So, the rates here are in accord. Easy. That's all I care about. :)

This has been a bizarre story that's cropped up over the years - and the guy's been jailed again: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-27643702
A man with a cow slurry fetish has been jailed for five years after threatening to kill a family who tried to stop him targeting their farm.

David Truscott, 44, repeatedly rolled around naked in cow slurry and developed an obsession with a farm in Redruth, Cornwall.... targeted the property for eight years.... Last year he admitted making threats to kill and also damage property..... regularly entering the farm to perform a sex act in slurry.

The court was told he then decided to exact revenge on the owners when they erected bollards and removed slurry from their farm in a bid to deter him..... Truscott, who was jailed in 2005, 2009 and 2011 for his actions at the property, repeatedly set fire to their shed, tractor, enclosures and hay - killing a calf in one blaze.

Was the kipper a smoked fish or an elected representative from a dodgy political party?t

    I know which I'd rather find.

Definitely the smoked fish variety. The other sort is too horrible to contemplate, but would doubtless be a whole new form of talking book.

I'm hoping at some point more stuff will get digitised, there are big gaps at the moment. Some will never be filled due to loss of documents during the war, but many more are waiting for an army of volunteers to upload them. More is happening all the time, but a lot depends on how long you are willing to wait. Which is very frustrating.
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

There is a foreign newspaper site out there (just been trying to find it, but didn't and one's down for maintenance so that might be the one).... they scanned in newspapers, which are fully searchable. When you view the piece there's an OCR section which is fully editable by anybody - I know as I found one of these pieces myself and spotted some OCR errors, so edited them online without having to register or anything.

That type of system would be good... so all 'staff' have to do is scan stuff in - and the transcription can be done a bit here and a bit there as many people spot errors.

There is too much "guardianship" of this stuff - rather than just bulk uploading it all and letting the people sort it out.

I've looked at volunteering for transcriptions (might look again once I'm settled/moved), but they seem to offer you sets ... and I think people would be more motivated to transcribe if they could do some picking...... eg. you transcribe the pages around the parts you are interested in....
