Reported incident - has come up as claim

Options
Hi everyone,

I'm new here - I hope someone can advise me!

I reported an incident to my insurance company earlier in the year - I never made a claim, my car was fine, so was the other persons. No airbags went off, no-one was injured, I thought that was the end of it. I also thought I made it clear that there was no damage to either car when I phoned up to report it. However, my renewal has come through, and when I phoned up earlier to discuss it, it turns out the other person has made a claim and so far, had £2,000 paid out.

According to my insurers, a letter was sent to me that I never received. I also phoned them a few weeks ago as I have a new car so needed to sort the insurance out for that, and the claim by the other person wasn't mentioned then. So I've had no idea this has all been happening.

I have now lost 2 years NCB and my insurance has gone up by £400 - for a claim I never made, and never knew was being made by the other person!! Where do I stand with this?

Thank you in advance for any help/advice that can be given

  • Were you at fault? If so there isn't much you can do. If you were not at fault you need to tell them that.

So you informed them of the incident and presumably gave them circumstances which meant that it was your fault.

You had no damage to your car so why would you make a claim? The third party evidently found there was some relatively minor damages (£2k is very small in insurance terms, particularly if it includes hire) and therefore your insurers settled it based on you being liable.

Why did you ring if there was nothing to report?

If you didn't file a written report then the insurer has little option but to accept liability.
