In my book it's going to be up to Nationwide to refund this to you. They should have already cancelled your card and logged this with the fraud department, it's not really a Visa Chargeback in the traditional sense where you're disputing the transaction as you didn't receive the goods, this is fraud.

Agreed. If a retailer uses Verified by Visa, MasterCard SecureCode or American Express SafeKey they become immune from fraud based chargebacks anyway.

The card has been cancelled but only because I requested it. Nationwide are sending me a letter to sign and return to state that the transaction is not mine. In the meantime I have moved most of my money to another account so I can still access cash.

I find it astonishing that Nationwide didn't cancel the card for you, even more that you had to request it. I'm not sure what Nationwide are playing at, it seems clearcut here. Your card was used fraudulently, perhaps Nationwide think it might not have been you but it's not for the largest amounts of money in the world. Secondly due to the way Nationwide implement VbV it's leaving them wide open to abuse like this.

I just hope they're quick in the resolution of this, it will certainly be good to post back how you got on.

Nationwide aren't the only ones who skip the verification unless the transaction is suspicious. Lloyds and HSBC (I think) do it as well. Also all third party issued Amex cards (Lloyds, TSB, MBNA and soon Barclaycard) skip the password section, you just press proceed.

Nationwide have refunded the money to my account, while they investigate the payment.

Apparently it can take up to 150 days for it to be fully resolved.

I've returned from holiday to find a letter from Nationwide to tell me that their investigation has concluded that I authorised the disputed transaction. Unfortunately I can't contact them until Tuesday to discuss this, and also find out who the person they have addressed the letter to is, as it is not me!

I can see this turning into a complaint.
