What is going on in this photo?

Hi, just wanted advice on this photo, this house sold a couple of years ago, but can anyone tell me what the posts are doing in each corner (living room/)? There is no bottom to the posts, so isnt for support?

    Speakers for a surround system, putting them up there makes the sound constant. If surround sound is to be effective it has to be specifically laid out, which usually means at least one speaker ends up behind chair/sofa which can cause the sound to be muffled. Hanging them from the ceiling prevents this.
