Mum's Shares

My mum died recently and sorting through her things I found an old Abbey National share certificate for 100 shares. I rang the relevent (Santander) number and was told that there were no shares listed under my mum's name. Ok, but I can't see my mum selling the shares, as if there was anything financial involved she would always ask me first and then get me to do whatever it was she wanted to be done and, if by chance she did sell the shares would she still have the certificate? It's not a question of the shares or if they're worth much - I don't know what they're worth, it's just I don't feel it's been looked into thoroughly. I suppose I just have to accept it though?

Might they have been in her OH's name and she just talked about them as hers but never changed the name perhaps?
