Cost for delay of returning keys

A quick question - I'm fairly sure of the answer, but want to double check.
A tenant's lease is up on Monday 3rd March. They move out Saturday 1st and let LL know they are ready to hand keys back (He knew they were going. Was informed in December and has brought several prospective tenants for viewings). LL doesn't answer phone Saturday, Sunday, Monday or Wednesday. Finally gets back to tenant on Friday 7th and says he's busy and will call after the weekend to arrange keys. Finally meets tenant (well ex tenant now) on Friday 14th to get keys back.
There is no rent due from tenant for this period right?
It's not me asking my tenant before I get lambasted! It's a friend who asked me as she had her ex-LL ask her for rent this morning as she had 'use' of the house. It's not her fault he was busy (he had a relative in hospital) surely?
There's no deposit to come back (he views the protected schemes as a scam) and the rent in advance was used to pay the last month's rent (his suggestion) so he's said he'll be sending her a bill.

No. Handing over keys is not the only thing that determines surrender of a property. Hopefully the tenant kept a record of their communications somehow.
Tell the LL to sue or shut up.0 -
Put in a counter claim for secure storage of the keys . . .0

Thanks for that. I was really sure that was the case, but it was one of those that I'd never encountered before so wanted to double check!
He's got a real cheek imo. She's taken today off work to meet him (she was off all around the move) because his new tenant is desperate to get moved in tomorrow.
Thanks again
