Maybe you could set the record straight then.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0 -
I don't know about Graham, but in my 27 years in the public sector I`ve had 65 periods of sickness (inc. 14 times after being assaulted) totalling 241 days off work.
Wow. In my twenty years in the private sector I've had one period off, of two days in total.
Quite the difference.0 -

I don't think it matters in some jobs in the private sector if you are off sick, because the work is still there waiting for you when you get back. In about 20 years I've probably had about 10-15 days off sick, but in that same period I've probably worked about 10-15 days per year as unpaid overtime (it isn't actually unpaid of course, it was part of my salary).
I've only been in the public sector 4 years and haven't had a sick day yet. I can't really take a day off as I'm a lecturer and the students would lose out, but if I had something contagious I suppose I would have to take a day off.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
There was a study by a University (Nottingham?) a few years ago (which irritatingly I can't now find). It found now significant difference between the amount of unpaid overtime between the Private & Public sectors except in healthcare & education where the Public sector did more (which may have just been a statistical blip due to the Public sector dominating those sectors)
To be fair there are a fair number of unsackable lazy so and sos where I work but it just means that other people end up carrying them.0 -
They are not unsackable, they just needs someone to bite the bullet and write a few bad reports, if they don't change then out they go...0

You can't possibly compare yourself to one other individual without knowing their health. I have colleagues with hundreds of days absence but that's because they've had serious, life threatening health issues to deal with while I have been very lucky and have only had 1 day off in over 5 years.0 -

In the private sector shirkers often get the cold shoulder from their fellow employees. Patterns of sickness normally emerge.0 -
Sickness days are taken into consideration when jobs in the public sector are shed - that has lead me to go into work when I really should've taken the day off. I know that's had an impact on the number of days taken - no-one wants to be made surplus because of unnecessary days off.0
