That's about average for a router. You should have told Sky you wanted to cancel your contract, you'd have got it for free.

Oh dear the secret EU law is mentioned again.
  • Thanks to all of you for your really helpful replies!

    To answer some questions :

Business use: I work for myself as a limited company and all of my work is done from home so yes, it is a viable business expense. ;)

Cost: yes, this is what I was quoted by Sky and when I told them I would just go buy one at Maplin, they said they cannot guarantee it will work with their broadband connection and that if something goes wrong they also cannot help.

In hindsight felt a little bullied into purchasing this and feel disgusted that I gave Sky another £70 when I've been reading in other places that this may have been a faulty / cheap router.

So I'm now trying to weigh up the possibility of asking for a refund after the transaction has already been made. I'm aware it may be harder now that the money is in their hands....

Does anyone reckon that threatening to leave them will get me a refund?

Time to do that, as suggested, was before handing over any cash. You've got absolutely no chance getting a refund now.

You could write a letter and tell them how unhappy you are, you could also hint in that letter that you will be looking at other deals.

If you bought over phone then the DSR would have applied so you could have sent it back for a full refund. Too late now though as you only have 7 days so you are stuck with having paid £70.

No harm in emailing the CEO office to point out your statutory rights should have meant at least a half price router replacement as it is unreasonable for something like this to fail in 2 years.

You may be able to get some goodwill credit against the broadband cost. But beware as they may try and lock you in for a minimum term.

If a normal router won't work with sky then it is a very good reason not to remain with them at all. The last thing you want when you're running a business is being held to ransome. Make sure you have an alternative for emergencies eg mobile provider's usb stick.
  • As people said could of cancal the get it for free.
I did same to BT but they tried to get me to sign to min contract to get new router.. said no in that case i go ahead with the cancal... pass to sales team obv lol told them no i want to cancalled. In the end they sent one for free....

My last one (BThome hub 2) i brought off ebay and lasted 4 years and mine on 24/7 and constant in use.. paid 3 quid for it + 2.50 delivery

Really, I have been on the internet for over 10 years and have only ever had three routers which are only switched off when away on holiday, the only reason I had a third was because I needed one when I switched to fibre last year.
