loud noise when taps turned on!!help please.

I have a loud humming noise which I can hear in the upstairs bedrooms when a tap is turned on in the kitchen be it the hot or cold tap. I also get a noise, though less louder, when the downstairs toilet is flushed. The noise goes as soon as the tap is switched off.

I run on a combi system and there is no noise when the upstairs bathroom taps are turned or or the toilet is flushed.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Your help would be appreciated.

Look for the main stop valve on the incoming water main and turn it off, then open it half a turn and see what happens.

Sounds like our loos - which flush, but then 'fart' as the pipes resupply. Makes identifying who's where in the house simpler, but it is a bit startling for visitors.

Will try the turn it off, turn it less back on, thing!
