Vendor's vendor now wants additional month before completing

Your vendors vendor is messing about and either being very ignorant or very cheeky. However, someone has to compromise and it probably comes down to who is most worried about loosing the sale/purchase...
Don't forget the EAs stand to lose out if the chain collapses. You could try calling the EA of the house you're buying, and say that a month is ample to find a rental property, and can they convince the EA selling the vendor's vendor's house of this. That EA can put pressure on their client to clear out.
Depends on what the EAs think of the situation and their relationship with the people.
Also depends on their motivation on the case. We were lucky - one EA was selling all three houses being sold in our chain an in or £15-20k of commission. They were VERY focused on our chain and did a lot of chasing and issue-resolution for us.
