Gas & Electric Bill seems extremely high!!

Ninth Anniversary Combo Breaker
Hi,

We have been living in our first house for 6 months now and we have just had our first full gas and electric bill through and to say i'm shocked is an understatement!!

We have a 3 bedroom semi detached house and although it probably isn't the best insulated property around we deal with it being a little cold at times.

The bill from Npower for the past 3 months has come out at the following:

Gas - Used 10,447kWh at a cost of £421.90
Electric Used 1,069 at a cost of £159.97.

The projected cost for the next 12 months is as follows:

Electric £589.27
Gas £1019.48

Personally i think the electric is OK but the gas seems mightily high!

Im not an expert as this is our first house but what are peoples thoughts of the cost of £421.90 for just over 3 months worth of gas?

We have a gas hob and obviously the combi boiler uses gas too. Could the boiler be dodgy? or am i just getting worked up over nothing.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jonny

Gas is high (especially considering the mild winter) but not outrageous, elec is on the high side of average. Are the readings actual or estimated, what about the first 3 months, were the start reads correctly reported and used ?

"Probably isn't the best insulated property around" goes a long way to explaining the size of the Gas bill - Worth spending whatever you can afford to beef up the insulation, starting with the loft

The Elec bill is down to how and and how long, you use the appliances you have - Anything that uses heat, ( Tumble Dryer, Wash m/c ), eat power & money

It's your leccy that's a bit high, not the gas. It's not unusual to use 80% of your annual gas total during the coldest 3 months, which this billing period will cover (although it's been very mild compared to the previous 2 years).
If you haven't had the boiler serviced in those 6 months, then get it done now. And sort the insulation out, starting with the loft, if it's not up to current specs.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
