Worth servicing an old Nissan?

  • The real choice is about whether the repairs are costing more than the depreciation (and extra insurance) on a newer car, but it will usually have to get quite unreliable before that happens.

Oil and filter change. If you can learn to do it yourself you will save money in the long run. Obviously you will need a few tools, and I'd still take it to the garage every few years for a full service (including things like brakes, steering etc) but a simple oil and filter change every 6-12 months and it should last :).

Nissans are built to last my mum drives a 93 plate primera and is going strong apart from the usual wear and tear items.

better the devil you know

    This.

Nissans are built to last. They're up there with Toyota and Volvo.. or were. For the nissans of your era this is still the case. Unfortunately Renault bought them a few years ago and some of their engines have become of questionable quality since then.. such as a certain 4x4 pickup truck which keeps putting pistons outside of their engines.

Reliable cars are worth their weight in gold for the lack of hassle they give you. Age doesn't matter if it's more reliable than the new heaps of junk coming out off the forecourt.
  • It's never had any advisories. Sailed through every MOT.

thats sounds like you have a gem then. if it was my car i would keep it & have all the filters & plugs, coolant & fluids etc changed then i would change the oil & filter once a year & that would be the last major service to be spent for sometime.

your vehicle won't have as many electrical things that can cause problems & cost money to fix compared with newer vehicles.

as i say to our customers sometimes its better the devil you know.
