Trying to clean up laptop - help needed!

Hi all. Non techie here  Right then. Using the sticky, I managed to clean up my own laptop. So then my sis decided that I'm sufficiently techie to try and clean up her daughter's
That'll teach me eh?! So I started ploughing through the sticky again, and so far, so good. Installed MWAM, full scan, deleted offending articles, no problem. Installed ccleaner and ran a clean up - no problem.
Then I try to install Avast (using links on sticky) - but when I try to open it, it says "the application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect." etc. This has me stumped. I've tried to uninstall through the control panel - but the message "there was an error during product uninstallation". So I uninstalled using Avast's uninstall. Then re-installed, but it still has the same messages.
I've tried to do a hijack this log, and whilst I've got some info, (and saved it in notepad) there was an error message there too (denied access to the hosts file). The sticky loses me at this point!
I just don't know what to do next - would some kind techie soul with the ability to translate Techie speak to standard English please help!? I've been working at this all day and my brain's fried!

lots of toolbars apparent - amazon/ask/google/bing/free download manager as well as flash/skype/google update/java update/adobe speedlaucher,
backup and factory restore cures most things.!!

Thanks closed - but it's still got me stumped. I've downloaded the Visual C++ thing, but Avast is still not working. And at point no. 4 I've lost it - haven't got a clue what it's all about
OK, so I'm an idiot. Cos I don't know how to get rid of the toolbars either.
afaik, to backup and restore I'd need the original program disc (?) which sadly at the mo isn't available.0 -
most of your questions are covered in the speedup sticky, including the hijackthis host file problem
you could use mse or avira instead of avast.
toolbars (follow the sticky fully, and there shouldn't be any), uninstall in control panel, or ie, tools, manage add-ons.
backup and factory restore is covered at the end of the sticky.!!

You could download Chrome and uninstall Internet Explorer.Owed out = lots. :cool:0

The only thing that will fixe it is to first completely uninstall Avast!. Use the removal tool afterwards to be sure all of it is gone. Then download the C++ 2008 redistributable from the Microsoft site and install it. Then you can install Avast! and everything should be fine.
Remember to then run Windows update to get the latest patches to the C++ package.
Should work with vista and win7

Thanks Russ - I did use the removal tool - it wouldn't let me uninstall any other way. But despite downloading the C++ thingy, every time I've tried downloading Avast, (I've tried uninstalling and re-installing 3 times!) it still came up with the error. So I've given up and installed mse.
And I've managed to work my way through the whole sticky :j and I think I've got it sorted. If nothing else, the laptop's now behaving itself :rotfl: and I've got rid of the (annoying) Free Download Manager. Thanks for the help :T I'll be back if I've co**ed anything up :rotfl:0
