All the best for your final year exams and I hope you get this problem sorted.

Unfortunately, I know you are trying to help but I can only wish anything you were saying was true! It isn't.

Evidently different police forces have different policies then I just presumed it was the same policy nationwide...

Everything that I have said in this thread is correct in the police force that I live in.

Anyway - I hope that everything sorts itself out with your situation. Keep us updated.

Sorry, I was rude. I shouldn't have taken my frustration out on you! Thank you for your help and kind comments, I really appreciate the efforts of everyone on this thread :)

    Thanks everyone for their help.

I wanted to add that I may have badmouthed my insurance provider too enthusiastically earlier on. I think I spoke to one rather bad/rude advisor from claims who wasn't very helpful and gave me the wrong information.

I called Diamond again today and they've said that as I'm not making a claim:

    - I can choose to discontinue the policy, in which case I'd be refunded on the remainder of the premium up to my renewal. I would NOT be charged a cancellation fee for this.

    - I can reinstate the policy on another vehicle at any point up to 2 weeks before my renewal date. I won't be charged a transfer fee. If the vehicle I transfer to is cheaper to insure, I will be refunded the difference in the premium for the remainder of the policy.

    - My no claims for this year will continue (unless I choose to discontinue the policy).

Over all I think this is quite a generous response, they were also sympathetic and informative this time, which just makes you feel better tbh.

This means I can wait until after my exams to find a new car, and may even get some money back as I will be insuring in a much cheaper area. And by the end of the year I will have 3 years no claims.

Hope this is helpful if anyone else (or someone they know) finds themselves in a similar position.

I doubt it, you're higher risk now.

Good point - but surely only with Diamond? As I haven't made a claim, I don't think I need to ever declare this to any other insurer, so they simply won't know.

Surely even Diamond (the current company) wouldn't consider my car stolen in Birmingham to mean a greater risk for a completely different car driven in another part of the country? I mean, I didn't personally do anything foolish! The window was smashed and the car was hot wired. Could happen to any old car.

It doesn't look as though I'm getting the car back, so it being labelled "stolen" isn't an issue...

    Indeed.

Someone I know had a car stolen. A few days later the police rang them to tell them where it was, neatly parked in a housing estate about 200 miles away.

The police hadn't recovered it, didn't have the keys as it was locked, and initially refused to countenance there might be a chance of it disappearing if the thief returned to use it again, or that they might thus detect the thief.

What's more they had taken over two days from when they spotted it to bother to pass on the message to phone up.

When the owner complained, they grudgingly agreed to check if it was still there, but would not guard it until the owner could arrive with spare key 3 or 4 hours later.
