I cancelled my car insurance with 4 months to run,I had paid £300 deposit, they charged me £160 for cancelling and returned £140, does this sound about right.

A 300 deposit or 300 for the year?
you have well under half the policy left to run and yet gotten nearly a 50% refund so doesnt sound so bad depending on what you mean by deposit0 -
The full price was £1850 for the year.0

Then where does a deposit come into anything?
How much has been paid in total for 8 months cover from the total £1,850 premium?
If you arent happy with it, ask them for a break down to explain it. There will be a cancellation fee from the insurer, possibly another one from the broker if it isnt a direct policy. Optional extras like breakdown or legal expenses often have to be paid in full if cancelled after the 14 day cooling off period0 -
I paid the deposit then I was to pay 10 monthly payments.0
