I did exactly the same with DS2. He slept on a futon so was just off the floor and everything was out of harms way (apart from his favourite toys). Stairgate across the landing and if he was crying because anything was wrong I'd be in his room like a shot.
Like you say it 'possibly' isn't the best thing to do but he was probably much safer that way than having an extremely sleep deprived ratty Mummy at the end of her teather

thanks so much never thought of trying Aldis or Lidls they both have gardening speacils soon so will keep an eye out as we have them both at Porthmadog not to far to go ..
