Cancelled insurance help please

My hubby had a conviction 7 years ago minor offence, which you don't have to declare now as it's not motoring and it's over 5 yrs ago. However we had an insurance need for buildings 4 yrs ago and reading the small print should have declared the conviction. Our insurance once conviction declared was cancelled. My problem is all insurance sites ask for convictions under 5 yrs so no need to state. But they also ask ever had insurance cancelled. How many years will this be asked? Do we say no now conviction spent? Help....

the question you will be asked re cancelled policy would be "have you ever..." so it would be YES always
