HELP! Overpayment. Asked to pay back £992 suddenly!

Hi guys,

I'm self employed and trying to make it in the world. I started on tax credits in April 2012 and then by 2013 things had started to pick up. I got the renewal pack and I (foolishly) left it as I didn't want Credits any more.

The payments stopped and I thought everything was dandy. I wasn't earning over the threshold but I was earning enough to get by and thought I'd stop sponging off the state and get on with it.

Suddenly, BANG! Letter asking for £992 from part of last years Credits plops though my door and after calling 5 different numbers I'm told it's because I didn't fill in my pack that they want the money back even though they can see I wasn't earning over the threshold.

This is going to financially cripple me whether we arrange a magic way to repay the money or not, and on top of a ridiculous parking ticket it's totally made my week!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yup, and called all the damned numbers. I'm just frustrated as I was eligible for the money, but because I went about cancelling it the wrong way I now have to pay a thousand pounds I don't have back. Whether it's a payment plan or not it seems a little unfair to me.

Yep, I screwed up, but it's not a trivial amount of money they're asking for. I applied for it in the first place because I'm a small company with a small turnover so I don't have much to play with. I was eligible for the money I have to pay them back, just didn't fill out a piece of paper.

would you still qualify if you made a new claim? if so, may be worth it and ask them to offset the overpayment
