How did you get into gardening? (Designing not planting as such)

Hiya guys!

I am a young mother and we have brought a house last year - our garden has turned into a bit of a state.

We can't afford to hire a gardener so I am wondering how much I could do my self....my OH has big plans for it but nothing that he or I know how to do and that won't cost a bomb.

One plus side is OH works at a rental place that will let him bring some equipment home if any suggestions their.. (he keeps going on about a mini-digger but I am not sure if he is being serious!!!)

He did relay the patio last year but it isn't level and hasn't turned out great and is really dirty (he keeps saying he will pressure wash it but I don't think it's going to improve it that much surely?)...to give you some idea we have a small garden that is on a hill upwards with a path in the middle, the left side is mainly grass and lumpy with a shed at the top on a separate (kind of) patio and the right is patio then grass then soil (where he's planing his veg) with a side run of soil and a little broken fence separating the patio/grass.

Any thoughts? I've suggested building a decking on the left side so we don't have to dig to much soil out as it's lumpy and a lot higher then the other side for a BBQ but we don't get a lot of light that side.

My partners ideal garden is a BBQ and somewhere to sit in the sun + soil to plant stuff, where as mine would be the more flat grass and space for the kids to play...and we don't have that much space to begin with!!

Sorry for rambling on I guess I just don't no where to start !!
