I have been learning to drive recently, and booked my theory test for this Friday , two weeks ago to give myself plenty time to practice. However I was informed about the part of hazard perception which I stupidly thought was included within the theory test not different one. Now Im in a panic as Im quite rural and there are no shops selling it near me, Im tied with school times to travel a bit further and wont get a dvd delivered in time. Have been online and doing ones with the aa but as they repeat the same ones, I need some new ones!! And does anyone have any idea how much video clips they rotate with?? Have been on and done a mock test but just scraping a pass, I need help!!!

    Hi,

Sorry i don't know how many video clips they use online but I know you'll be fine with it. the hazard perception is really easy and just intuitive. I know so many people who think it's hard before going in for it, but after coming out its like wow, that wasn't so bad.

I'd send you my old DVD to help you learn but it was over 5 years ago that i passed and some of questions/tests may be a little old.

Jsut have faith in your own ability and keep practicing on the aa website. Click twice either side of a perceived hazard too... pro tip ;)
Don't be afraid of clicking too much, you can afford to get 0 on one. if you do, just calm down for the next ones.

    Good luck :)

Thank you both, I have been getting on average 55/60 but I panic in exam situations!! Better go download that app and look out the Bach remedy :)
  • It's so ridiculously simple I wouldn't bother worrying about it. I know people who've just walked in and done them with easy passes.

There are 14 clips in the test, which contain 15 scorable hazards. (One clip contains two hazards)

Each hazard is scored out of 5, so the maximum possible test score is 75. The pass mark is 44.

Be aware that the publications (DVDs) that you can buy are NOT the official clips used in the test. They are look-alike mock ups designed to show you what the test will look like and to let you "have a go". The marking/scoring systems used in these commercially available practice tests do not accurately reflect the scoring system used in the real test as this is known only to the DSA.

Although the DVDs give you some reassuring experience of the testing situation, actual perception of hazards on the road cannot be rehearsed from your computer desk or armchair at home. Only real driving lessons and driving experience with good professional tuition can develop your hazard awareness skills to the standard required for driving on Britain's roads. Those with this skill will find the test a breeze, even if they haven't practised on a DVD before. Those who fail are those who just don't know what a developing hazard looks like, or try to overthink "how the computer will score me". Forget the computer, focus on the hazards in the scenario which are likely to cause a driver to change speed or direction significantly.

Just like in the practical test, if your driving skill and knowledge is good enough, you will pass. I wish you every success :)

Well in my experience the Hazard Perception is a bit of a lottery as to what they are looking for. I failed several dummy tests and my daughter failed the real one. They are pathetic. You just don't know whether the hazard is supposed to be a cyclist, a bend in the road, a junction; could be anything in a lot of them. Just pot luck if you pass or fail.

...and I have had 40 years of driving with no accidents whatsoever.

But is that down to your good driving or other drivers perceiving you as a hazard and avoiding you  ;)

My money is on EdGasket having 40+ years of REAL life experience of the job rather than somebody who has talked about it on a multiple choice quiz and only has a handful of years experience.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

I did it on Friday, and passed with 58 out of 75. Its explained very clearly that you are supposed to click the mouse at anything which could be perceived as a hazard, more specifically anything which could force the driver to stop slow down or significantly change your driving style. Whether its a cyclist, people approaching a zebra crossing, someone approaching their drivers door etc.
