Getting agent to take house off the market?

Hi,

I'm a FTB so I'm totally at a loss as to what is normal in this whole process!
I've put an offer in on a house, which has been accepted. The agent has told me that they won't take it off the market until I've engaged a solicitor (and then quoted me for how much their 'preferred' firm would cost... Ouch!).

Is this the norm?

I don't want to be bullied into using their firm and want to have time (well, a few days!) to find one that suits me and my budget.

    It was certainly normal when I bought mine (10 years ago!), they said the same, it would remain on the market until I supplied them with the details of my solicitor.

    It only took a couple of hours and a few phone calls to find one I was happy with and I rang the EA back the same day with the details.

    Why havent you got a solicitor in mind already?

    Too right it should stay on the market till then , and easy enough to avoid their legal offerings
    Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

    Useful to get a good solicitor lined up beforehand. And shouldn't take you long to get one so you can give EA details.

    Agreed- I'd think the seller or their agent was acting shabbily if they failed to take the place off the market after they had issued the 'memorandum of sale' confirming the agreed price...

    which they don't do til they know both sides' solicitors, as these are cited on the memo, which conventionally, is taken by solicitors as confirmation to proceed
