outside light (not floodlight)

Hi

My sparky coming out thursday to fit a outside light for me (out the front) , i did initially want a dusk till dawn (on all the time, with an energy saving bulb) but have since decided i want one that only comes on when someone is near AND only comes on dusk till dawn

because of time , it needs to be from screwfix or homebase , any tips welcome please

i will , was hoping someone might recommend a certain brand etc , i can see the price difference between metal and plastic is large etc

Are you wanting something that just looks like a floodlight - i.e. basic functionality that will light up away from the house (i.e. garden), or something that just lights up the doorway as you approach (Lantern \ wall light).

What is to the front of the property? how long a driveway - would a floodlight be complained about...
Do you want LED or standard bulb, with the lights there so many styles from traditional lanterns to more contemporary styled (Brushed steel).. what is your \ property style...

Our house is 1970`s `georgian` , and the path way leads to a small green , and is about 8 meters long , something that just lights up the doorway really , just for a bit of light for the key and to make the place feel secure etc

Floodlight may not be complained about but would deffo look out of character , everyone else has wall lanterns

Something long lasting over style , so best to get plastic?

You may want to consider a HI/LO light - comes on at dusk at a reduced level, but brightens to full brightness if someone approaches it.

hmm , cant see any of them in screwfix , i am seeing that PIR lights tend to last less time , and photocells last longer , as they dont have to keep `switching` ?

But i am also seeing that metal , even SS will rust and plastic looks crappy

If you get Hi/lo lights, be aware that some like mine don't take energy-saving bulbs, even if the fitting is the correct one. Being beside the seaside, beside the sea, my metal coach lamps look like carp in a few weeks, and I've opted for plastic where I can.

I used Wickes and a local lighting shop, so I can't report on the ones available to you.

Btw installed my back floodlight no worries , looks belleding good , went outside in changed to drill before breaking through plaster and no damage suffered

now , i only put a 120watt up which mrs dan-dan doesnt believe is bright enough
