large oak mirror hanging

Hi,

I have a large, heavy oak mirror to put up on my walls and wondering if anyone can help on putting it up.

The wall is plasterboard, and used a stud finder recommended on here, but where I want to put the mirror alas there is no stud.

The wall is plasterboard, and wonder what rawl plug (???) or siilar i need to use to fix it to the wall, as I have visions of, given the standard of my DIY, it falling down in the middle of the night, or worse on top of a child.

This is the mirror

Thanks Paul:)

    You need something like this

When you screw them in the back opens up and expands onto the back of the plasterboard.

I wouldnt hang anything really heavy on a plasterboard wall unless attached to the battens regardless of fixings , the fixings might be fine but the wall will take all the weight and its only attached to the battens!
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Dan-Dan is spot on - you need to be screwing into the studs.

If the studs are not in the position you require, then screw a batten, horizontally, into the studs. Then screw your mirror into the batten ( it will be hidden once you hang the mirror on it ). This means the weight is still being taken by the studs.

The problem with these special fixings is that the weight is still being put on the plasterboard. Yes, they spread the weight over a broader area than a simple screw would, but ultimately plasterboard is not a strong material.

Thanks for the replies, would never have thought of using a baton from the stud.

Will have a look at doing that and also at the Rawlins plug mentioned.
