Tesco are trumpeting a "great offer" in 'Fuelsave'.

Yet I remember the days when you spent £50 and got a voucher for 5p off petrol. In this offer you get 2p for each multiple of £50 and you have to start saving again at the end of each calendar month when your total will be wiped!

Bearing in mind the average car (say a Ford Focus) has a tank size of 53 litres (call it 50 because you'll never be bone dry), your saving is £1 per tankful on each £50 spent in store. In other words 2% discount.

    Wow!

Sorry, Tesco, but it's not bringing me back from Lidl.

Exactly - not sure why this is getting so much prominence and a MSE article bigging it up - has MSE lost it's edge since selling out to MoneySuperMarket ??

.., as compared to the simple 5p off for a 50p shop, Tesco Fuel save sucks. Sainsbury's will be laughing hem selves silly - indeed I got a fuel 6p off for a £20 shop voucher, and other goodies through the door the other day from Sainsbury's.

Tesco Fuel Save - worse than previous deals, by far.

"5p off for 50p shop" wow that would be a good one.

Yes, you may have had a voucher from Sainsbury - but you'll have to use that within the next fortnight. Maybe you've only recently filled up.

The Tesco Fuel Save is on-going - you don't have to do a big 'shop', all small shops will be combined. Your receipt will show the fuel save pence p/ltr off to be used by the end of the next month.

One of the things to guard against, is someone else in the household who has a keyfob card - can use the 'fuel save' before you do !!
I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard
  • We don't go to Tesco that often but last week went in and spent over £50 so that was 2p off fuel. The clubcard had 4p that needed using by the end of May so we called in for the fuel. What I did not understand was we could only use the 4p off and not the 2p that we had earned on the day. Any ideas ?

The money you spent in April credits you (2p for every £50.00) with a value to use by the end of May, the money you spend in
May, credits you with a value (in multiples of 2p) to use by the end of June etc.

  • So that 2p off can be spent in June then :) but that will still make it more expensive fuel than local discount garage.
