Which Desktop - help sought!

Looking for new desktop with Windows 7 - don't mind refurbished or second hand. Mainly used for browsing, hotmail, Facebook etc. The odd letter, storing some photos etc etc but not gaming.
There are a couple of Second hand ones with 1 year guarantee as follows:
Hp i5 750@2.66Ghz
4 GbRam,
640 GB HD
DRW drive
Windows 7 £ 290

or
Custom built
i5 2320@3 GHz
8 Gb ram
500 GB HD
DRW
Windows 7 Pro £230

There is a new one:
Intel Core 2 duo 6300
4 GB Ram
1tb HD
DVD rw
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit £349

Should I go for second hand and if so which one or go for new or any suggestions please.

Any help gratefully accepted.

Is there any reason not to upgrade your 'old' desktop?

It'll be much cheaper than buying a new one....
  • Quite old, Win xp. Not much memory. Just think I need to start again with new one. Any suggestions please?

Desktops are expandable and can be modified.

Move the current primary drive to the secondary.
Install a solid state drive as the new primary.
Put a new OS on the primary.
    Add more RAM.

Will still be cheaper than a new box.
  • Thanks for replies. Googler - I wouldn't know where to start - but perhaps I should be brave and look inside. :)

Don't you want to learn new stuff?

Someone once said - everyone should learn a new skill every year. Doesn't matter what it is - welding, baking, installing components in desktops, plumbing.... whatever. Add something new to the armoury every year. (I'm not saying I've done this every year, but....)

There are guides all over YouTube and other parts of the web telling you how to do this stuff. There's books on the subject, and magazines. It's not rocket science, and you don't need a degree to attempt it.

The inside of the desktop will likely be VERY dusty. Take it out into the open before giving it a good blast with the compressed air can (available from all good electrical and DIY stores) unless you want to spread the dust around the room and breathe it all in.

Yes, we would need to know what you have now, because if it's an XP machine from the early 2000s, then it's likely the motherboard wouldn't have much elbow room for upgrading RAM etc.
