How Long does a retailer have to charge your debit card?

Hello everyone! it's my first time time posting so please be nice
Last Sunday i filled my car up with petrol (£60) and today (1 week and 1 day) the money still hasn't left my account. My available funds were showing £60 less untill wednesday when it suddenly went back up again, as if i never made the transaction.
My question is have i got away with it ?:p. How long does a retailer have to charge your account? i have searched endlessly over the internet and can't seem to find a solid answer. It will be a pain to have to leave a £60 buffer in my account all the time 'just incase'.
I'm hoping someone on here can shed some light!! :A

6 months without notification
6 years ,after 6 months the company will have to notify you and seek another authorisation0 -
Thankyou for your repsonse!!
Thats a shame, i do think it's pretty poor though. Im sure this catches alot of people out!
I was under the impression that transactions and accounting are supposed to be 'timely' as a standard.
Never mind, you win some, you lose some :rotfl:.0 -

Technically the second authorisation would be optional - card processing does not technically require any authorisation and merchants can go straight for collection (though their merchant fees would go through the roof for doing this).
The above is otherwise technically right, assuming its in England or Wales (5 years in Scotland) however some merchants will attempt to collect without giving notice and most the time banks allow it to go through. You can of cause complain to the bank and ask for it to be reversed if its after 6 months old0 -

Yes it does, which is why a week rarely goes by without somebody posting exactly the same question somewhere on the forum to receive exactly the same answer. I suppose if it's asked and answered often enough the entire UK population will eventually know about it,
