Tree Felling

Hi everyone,

I need to have some trees removed from the back garden due to age and tree disease. Told the job is fairly straightforward. The trees are as follows: redwood tree (large, taller than our house, probably well over 10 m in height), 2 conker trees (also large, similar height to redwood), 2 small fruit trees (old but no more than about 4 m in height and fairly thin trunks). We've been given a quote of £650.

If anyone has any experience with this, could you please let me know if you think it's a reasonable price?

Thanks.

Price sounds reasonable if thats what has to be done, but do they really all need to be removed? What disease do they have? Seems a very drastic course of action to take.

We have a conifer tree that is higher than our house and we have been quoted £250 to have this taken down. We also asked for a rear garden conifer to be cut down in height by about a third and was quoted a few hundred pounds for that too.

not sure if these prices are good value or not but had 2 different firms quote me for the front garden tree and they were about £20 or £30 difference between them.

What a shame - at that height the redwood and horse chestnuts are only youngsters.

which is why I'd advise getting a second opinion on whether they need to come down. Its always a shame to fell trees and should be a last resort.

Contact your local council to check it's ok to even touch them before you do anything. If they've got tree preservation orders on (TPO) you will need permission to work on them first.

And don't rely on them being out of sight - a nosy neighbour will almost certainly be on the phone to the council the minute you start. Some people get very particular about trees.
  • I'd cut the 2 small fruit trees down yourself if they are diseased. Would bring the quote down a little bit- but not much. Tree surgeons are expensive. The quote sounds about right.

Disease can be a reason to cut down a tree. Age can't.

But the price would be about right and, if they are professional, they won't touch any of them until you've produced something from the council to confirm they aren't covered by a TPO.

Sounds about right. We've just paid £200 (inc VAT) to have one willow tree taken down (about the height of the house). £200 was the cheapest quote we had. Only took them two hours!

Even if the company checks TPOs for you, it's worth double-checking yourself for peace of mind. Our council has an online map with every TPO marked on it, so I checked that there were none on our property.

Agree with others though - always a shame to fell trees. I almost cried seeing our willow come down yesterday, but it was in a really bad way. :(
