    =countLinks(A1 : A10)/2 ?

or in the vba "countLinks = countRng/2"

but best to probably not have a merged cell for this sort of thing as it will be prone to errors if the cell merging gets changed.

......................such as if you are doing analysis of the people and skills using a pivot table that would automatically give you a tabular or graphical analysis of your people and their skills.

I have here taken a liberty suspected that you wish to do some analysis of the people and their skills as an end result (rather than just the simple counting you have asked about) and next step removes a lot of manual effort and is very flexible. See under Data/Pivot table and the resulting wizard for such things.

Can i obtain a number from a Colour?

My next field cell has 2 Colour options

    Yellow
    Green
Maybe easiest to go back a step when counting colour. It's not impossible to do that under vba code but what makes the cell coloured? Is it another formula?

The Colour will simply be inputed manually........

the whole table is indeed collating information on folks abilities along with some other stuff.....

i will attempt to post an explanation in my next post

I have had problem just trying to post a copy of a few cells so I am not surprised. It is probably a limitation of the forum but perhaps others will be able to advise.

In the meantime I have sent you a private message that may help. Unless somebody else can help this afternoon I could possible help this evening if you can wait! Regards
  • Don't be afraid to add an extra 'helper' column or two, it sounds like you need to think about the contents and structure of your worksheet to aid the analysis.

Adding separate columns for the Hyperlinks and 'colours' will make things so much easier for you. Then it's a simple COUNTA for your Hyperlinks column, and instead of adding just a colour (format) to a cell, assign a text value to each colour and input that instead. This way you can simply do a COUNTIF, then just use Conditional Formatting to shade your cell the corresponding colour.
