Unmerchantable Quality Carpet where do i stand

Hi 16 months a go we had our house recarpeted. Large hall way stairs & landing. The house is empty during the day 5 days a week as we work 9 - 5. after about a year ( maybe less ) of use we have noticed that there are wear 'tracks' in the carpet which we cannot move ( kitchen to lounge , up the stairs, bathroom to bedroom ) when to be honest there hasnt been that much traffic - ( especially stairs and bathroom to bedroom ) my question is simple what is my best recourse on this matter ? in my view there has been 'normal use of the product and it has failed in a relatively short period of time. it is very unsightly and to me looks like its been down for 10 years :(

I had a similar issue with a carpet a couple of years ago. The 'tracks' could be oil rising up through the pile after the carpet being in use. The carpet company changed mine free of charge and covered the cost of the fitting. They said the lines had come from oil in the machines used to make the carpet.

Have you spoken to the carpet company?

thanks - i havnt spoken to anyone yet - dont know where to start - retailer or manufacturer. i think the tracks are more wear than from machines but my point is that there hasnt been heavy wear

It'd be best to speak to the company you bought the carpet from to see what they say. When they give you their response, post it on here and others might be better placed to advise you on what to do next.

Was the carpet sold as suitable for halls, starways etc?

to conclude - A guy from the retailer came out to our house. Immdeiately offered to replace with another carpet or laminate - cant camplain about that service
  • In which case, don't forget to mention the name of the retailer on here.

Companies that give good service deserve a mention just as much as those that don't.

i may have to go back on my praise of this company - in their store they make a big noise about being able to get most makes of carpet etc supplied within 3 - 4 days -- interesting that the 2 products that they promised to supply me with free grtatis as replacements are unavailable -- out of stock etc -- Even more interesting is that these products come from 2 DIFFERENT manufatureres - whats the chances of that heppening ?? ive been waitin 6 weeks for my replacement...............dont like being lied to .......... would rather them not have offered the replacement.....................

Ask another retailer if they can source it, then you'll know if they are telling lies or not.
