Neghbour's dog barking all day - what to do?

I've some neighbours who have taken to leaving their dog out in the back garden all day whilst they both go to work.
I think the animal is a bit deranged, because it just barks all the time.
Given that the weather has brightened up a bit, I was going to leave my back door open and get some fresh air, but now I've got a headache from the stupid animal.
It's obviously not very happy with its lot, but leaving it out like that doesn't seem right.
I get on alright with the neighbours, but I don't want a summer of this; is there anything that can be done without causing ructions.
(I have to say that I'm hoping it's bugging another neighbour enough for them to complain to the RSPCA or someone.)

They might not be aware that their dog barks constantly. Might be worth mentioning it to them, taking the stance that you know they will be concerned about their dog's welfare and thought they should know that he barks the whole time so clearly isn't very happy?DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

I would be knocking on there door this evening and telling them. If they arent there then they cant hear it and its totally unacceptable for them to expect you to listen to it.
If you get no luck talking to them then phone the rspca yourself, why would you wait for someone else to do it?Ant. :cool:0 -
The other option is the council - excessive barking is potentially a noise nuisance and they will issue a warning to the owner if they deem it so.0

I think the council is the best option - I believe you need to log date and times the dog barks. Maybe do it for a week or so and notify them. Your first port of call should really be to the neighbours to let them know the dog is barking all the time, although if that did not have a satisfactory outcome and you then went to the council, they would probably realise it was you that reported the noise nuisance.0

We're in the same situation. Dad ended up putting a note through their door. The barking starts at 8am almost every single day.
They apologised and said the dog will be put into a crate. It's a puppy and it appears (from all the barking and whinging it does) that it's left all day.
The neighbours the other side (her father) has reported them to the council.
It started again this morning around 9am, thankfully from the sound of the door slamming, someone was around.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

That poor little puppy must be so distressed. Cannot understand people taking on young puppy if they're not around for most of the day. So unfair on the poor animal. Feel sorry for neighbours too. We're in the same situation. Dad ended up putting a note through their door. The barking starts at 8am almost every single day.

Indeed. We got our puppy (she's now 10 months old:eek:) when she was 8 weeks. There's always someone home. When we got our previous 2 from the rescue centre, (they were 6 months and 17 months) they asked if there would be someone around for most of the day, which there is.Sealed pot challenge #232. Just tell them nicely. Reporting them will cause friction and the last thing you need is to be on bad terms with neighbours

The dog's owner's father has reported them?0
