should I have let housing benefit know that I was in hospital

You can go into hospital and still be paid HB (up to 52 weeks) - no problem.

Having just read some previous posts of yours I must add that if your means tested benefits stopped because of your being in hospital then your HB may have stopped too because they inform the council of the benefit ending.
If this has happened then you need to contact the council and tell them what has happened. You will probably need to provide proof of your stay in hospital - it doesn't have to be a fit note.0
