Liability Insurance

Hi,
This is my first post and I hope this is the correct place to post it.

My wife has power of attorney over the affairs of an elderly relative in Germany. My wife is German but resides, with me, in the UK. We are looking for personal liability insurance to cover my wife for any decisions made.

German authorities have told my wife that, if she lived in Germany, she would be automatically covered but as she lives in the UK, she is not and would have to take out a personal policy. Allianz in Germany told her that they can provide cover if she resided in Germany but as she does not she must take a UK policy.

As the power of attorney is written in German law would anyone know of an insurance company that might consider covering my wife with a liability policy? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Havent heard of it as a class of insurance but it may well exist with niche players

If Allianz in Germany have said they write it why not ask their UK office? Alternatively either approach a decent local broker (not Swinton) or possibly an age related charity which will have more experience of power of attorney and thus maybe any connected insurance

The closest thing I can think of is a bond of caution. It is usually for executors but I think you can get them in cases of incapacity.

Usual suspects would be aviva, rsa, Zurich. If you can get to speak to the right person in any of these, I am sure they will tell you if what you want/need is available.

Thanks for the replies. I have spoken to a couple of local insurers and they've been unable to help, even with advice. One did tell me to contact the Law Society, which I did, but got no help from them.
Allianz were no help at all, telling me we were misinformed in Germany.
An age related charity is somewhere we haven't thought of so, we'll give that a go. We can also look into the "bond of caution" which I've never heard of.

    Thanks again for your help.
