I'm looking for my first lap top mainly for net access to browse, watch movies and listen to music, some wordprocessing and excel.
My eyesight isnt great so I would need at least a 17 inch screen.
I dont want to spend more than £350.
Im not sure where to begin so I would be grateful for some ideas to get me started.

That may be tricky. Have you got an Office license already? Or would you be happy with a free package? (LibreOffice or OpenOffice).some wordprocessing and excel. .
OR may be Office 2010 Starter (basic Word and Excel with adverts) will do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVt58pP8h0w
Now to look for a 17inch laptop...0 -
Absolutely any modern laptop will do all those tasks with ease, but getting a 17 inch one for your budget (and assuming you use open market software to avoid any more expenditure) is a big ask-you're not going to be able to pick and choose. At that price you're probably looking at a refurb. Personally I'd try and up your budget by another £100.
But I'll happily be proven wrong if someone can find one for £350...No free lunch, and no free laptop

This one comes in at £350.40

If you can up your budget a bit, there are several for around £380-£400 at Argos, Save on laptops, Laptops Direct and no doubt a load of other places.0 -

I would leave that one alone, unless you like a Netbook like performance.0 -

Very slightly over your budget and a graded one but an A+ at that.
Would be more than capable of doing the things you would want to do.
Probably better for the money would be this....

many thanks. I just want to get a handle on how much I need to put aside. So I would be looking ideally at £450 for something new?"enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0

If you go out and buy a laptop with a high resolution 17" screen, you still won't be able to use it. Try a 15" screen with a low resolution screen - bonus - it'll be cheaper! Go into PC World or whatever and look at the screens to see what resolution and screen size you're comfortable with.0

Oh I don't know.
My new Notebook has an AMD4, 1GHz processor, and it happily plays movies, and that's on only 2GB of RAM.0 -

That because of the GPU. The CPU is weak.
My old ACER Aspire One ZG5 Netbook plays movies. It's not unusual.0
