Thanks everyone - Please, be aware the flights have been booked already. I am going to have prioritise the site seeing. It appears we are going to need a holiday from holiday "as someone here rightly said".
I dont know if we need to drop out the Grand Canyon Idea alltogether.0 -
Given the timescale, your only realistic option for seeing the Grand Canyon is by helicopter - it's up to you whether or not you consider the cost in terms of money and time worthwhile. Personally, I'd rate it as very considerably superior to a day in Las Vegas but plenty of people would be of the opposite opinion. Las Vegas is like Marmite and Windows 8, most people either love it or hate it.I don't know if we need to drop out the Grand Canyon Idea altogether.
Again this is a totally personal opinion: miss out Los Angeles completely. From Las Vegas drive I-15 to Victorville, then stay north of the mountains via Palmdale, Santa Clarita and then I-405 to LAX, thereby missing most of the Los Angeles freeways.

Or if by some magic you get an extra day then do a bit of the Pacific Coast Highway, say from Ventura to Santa Monica."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0
