When Can I Tax New Car

Nicklt
Nicklt Posts: 319 Forumite
Hi,

Just bought a new car (well used), it has no tax atm so was wondering can I tax it now even though I don't have the V5C in my name yet?

Also can I legally drive it while it's between getting taxed? etc.

I'm not experience in this.

You should have been given the green V5C/2 part of the V5C from the seller/dealer you bought the vehicle from.

You can go to the Post Office with that bit and get a new VED disc right away.

Go to the Post Office with MOT (if its over 3 years old), the insurance certificate and the new keeper part of the log book (which the dealer should have given to you). You will then be able to tax it.

And no, you cannot drive it with no tax, it is an offence and you can be issued a fixed penalty notice for £100 (I stand to be corrected on the amount).

You don't need the MOT Certificate or an Insurance Certificate - only the V5C/2 and the cash.

Sorry, insurance appears to have disappeared off of the list, but both the .gov website (https://www.gov.uk/car-tax-disc-without-v11-reminder) and the Post Office website (http://www.postoffice.co.uk/vehicle-tax) both say that MOT certificate is required.

OK - it seems you still need to produce a MOT certificate - I must have misread the info that was announced back in December 2013.

Presumeably NickIt has that as who would but a used car without an MOT if it needed one. (Don't answer that one. LOL)

NickIt - If you try doing it online the new disc will be sent to the previous keeper.

Go to the Post Office tomorrow - most of them open at 09.00

Yep, well looks like I'm walking my daughter to school tomorrow then, and then walking to work. Woohoo :(

No because it will be delivered to the address of the old registered keeper.

Obviously this was never said, but as with most things, it's only an offence if you get caught. I've just done a quick search to see if theres a defence if you're driving to the post office (like there is for MOT), but there doesn't appear to be.
