Unauthorised absense from school - one day

My children (2 in comp 1 in junior school) will be missing one day of school soon, as it's their great, great grandmothers 100th birthday and there is a big family reunion but it's 4 hours drive away.

They all normally have excellent attendance (I think all 3 have 100% this year up to now)

What would you do? Tell the heads the truth or lie and have them all get a bug Thursday night?

I'd lie personally. I don't think it really matters just for one day though so whichever you feel most comfortable doing :)

I'd tell the truth- the school where I work wouldn't have a problem with that, although it depends on age and how close they might be to exams.

Do you know how strict the school is? I wrote a note the day before I took my DD out of school for one day to let them know, not expecting for a second that it could have been agreed (was prepared for the consequences), so was surprised when not only we were not fined (but that was before September so didn't expect to be) but they actually told DD that if I had written in sooner to request authorisation, it would have been granted, despite the fact it was just to go on holiday abroad.

Different schools have different rules. I wouldn't lie because it would mean expecting my kids to lie and I wouldn't be comfortable expecting that of them.

But if you lie and the kids tell the truth, what happens there?

Whatever you decide to do, keep the debate on here and anonymous. I have known some parents to raise this kind of thing on facebook, only for some goody two shoes to dob them in to the school and cause unnecessary problems! Seriously some folk have nothing better to do with their time. The parents are worse for tale telling than the kids.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

    Nothing.

Nothing happens at all. Trust me, teachers have FAR more important things on their plates than to worry about a pupil taking one day off.

What sort of an example do you want to set your kids?

You don't get fined for one unauthorised absence though do you? It's five or ten isn't it? Not for one day.

I agree with Marisco, if you do get them to lie (I wouldn't personally) be careful that someone doesn't grass you up to the school - you'd be surprised what some people will do. There's been an issue in DD/DS's school recently and I can't believe that someone saw fit to go to the school with something they saw on Facebook which really was nothing.

Of course you tell the truth. It isn't going to be a problem. What sort of people actually think that setting your children an example of lying is a good idea?
