Kwik Fit Insurance Payment

On 5th December we used our switch card to pay our sons deposit on car insurance also setting up a direct debit in HIS bank account for the remaining payments. We were unaware that he had not being paying this until last week they withdrew £166.09 from our bank and after a few calls realised it was the charges for cancelling the policy. At the time of paying we stressed to the advisor that the deposit was a one off payment as not having a huge bank balance we cannot afford to pay this for our son and it was his responsibility. Can they do this? We had no warning, no letter and have now been in touch with the bank who are raising a dispute and also emailed to customer service to see if they can help. I am just so frustrated as we cannot afford this and have now left us with an unpaid rent for the week. Any advice would be great

I think your main complaint here should be with your son! If he has not been making payments on his insurance then it is inevitable that it will be cancelled, usually with fees attached
Can he not repay you the £166.09?
You may have had no warning of this charge as any correspondence would have been sent to the policy holder - your son and clearly he has not told you of the problems.
If you told the insurer at the time when you took the policy that you did not give any consent for "continuous payment authority" then you may have cause for complaint.
It could be that they have in their t&cs that they will debit a card in the event of non payment of DDs but if you have specifically told them that you card was only to be used for the deposit and they have accepted this then you should go through the insurers complaints procedure - maybe an agent has misadvised you. Insurers can normally listen to previous calls to establish what was said..0
