Hi all,

My Peugeot 306 1.4 LX needs a new clutch as its started to slip alot. Phoned around 8 places over the last few days for quotes and here is what i got. Amazing on the price range for the same thing.

Cheapest - Local One Man Band Garage £175 LUK or VALEO genuine clutch inc parts and fitting and 3 year warranty plus free collection and delivery as long as vehicle still drives.

Mr Clutch - £210 or £190 with Discount Voucher

Most expensive was a few places quoting £340 & £250.

Not sure which one to go with as i have never used the cheapest one man band garage before but have used other places but they have quoted well upto £340. I have heard bad things about Mr Clutch as well.

Chris

I wouldnt go anywhere near a Mr Clutch. Told a mate that his new clutch failed because of the endfloat in the crank. Whilst the endfloat was towards the top end of the specs it wasn't bad enough to leak oil etc.

I stripped it down and the reason it failed was the wafer thin hardboard type material used for the friction plate.

If the local garage has been trading for years with no changes in ownership i would use them.

My local garage have been going for many many years. At least 30. With the only change of ownership is when the gaffer retires and the next mechanic takes over.

  • How the heck can the local chap make a living at that price.

    Hi

Well the clutch to buy from a spares shop is £60 to £80 for the brand he has quoted and it takes a good few hours i am told so i bet his hour rate is around £20 to £30 an hour

Thats what i mean, if he's legit i don't see how can fund his premises and other costs and make himself a wage on that rate, but all power to his elbow if he can.

Maybe he's found an easy way to do the job in half the time, as some did with mk 3 Escort/Orions, again good luck to him.

Either way i'd be inclined to give him a punt, never know you might have found yourself that elusive gem, the good local mechanic, worth his weight in gold.
