Can someone clarify for me if setting up a mail redirection is an allowable expense when submitting a Tax Return as a Landlord.
Thanks

I doubt it. Mail redirection is for your personal use, nothing to do with running the letting business.0

You'll need to explain that further. Redirection from where to where?
If it's from a rental property to the landlord while empty, then yes - I'd have thought that would certainly be allowed.I'm not a lawyer, so this is just my opinion. Don't go acting on legal advice you get from a stranger on the internet!0 -
Thanks for the quick replies.
The rental property currently has tenants that I want the mail redirection setup for. The mail is to be redirected to the landlord. I guess then this is not an allowable expense

Is there some reason you do not want to inform senders of your current address?0 -

Sorry - I don't get you. Why do you want the tenants mail redirected to the landlord?
Either way, if it is connected in any way to your rental 'business' then just add it as a general admin expense. It'll probably be fine*.

Presumably the OP wants his/her personal mail redirected to themselves at another address. The key word being "personal" makes it unlikely to be fine with the taxman.0 -
Sorry I didn't make it clear did I. I used to live in the property I want mail redirection setup on. I want mail that would be addressed to myself redirected to where I live now, not the tenants mail.
I want this setup because the tenants are moaning about the amount of mail still coming addressed to me, mainly junk mail.
So do you think this can be justified as an admin expense?

- absolutely not
- no way
- negative
- not allowed
- ineligible
it is in no way wholly and exclusively a business related cost therefore it cannot possibly be claimed as a business cost, it may be junk mail or it may be letters from your mortgage company (who you are conning) but that just proves the point, it is not exclusively one or the other0
