best underlay to reduce noise and cold ?

Hello all,

I am going to get some quickstep laminate flooring (8 mm thick) done at our lounge downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs in a mid-terrace house.

I want to keep the noise interruption minimum for the neighbours and also want to ensure that the laminate floors are not freezing cold with bare feet as I have felt at some places.

Can someone please suggest some good underlay or any other tips for this.

Many Thanks

Big mistake IMHO to go for laminate esp. in the bedroom.

The cold on bare feet isn't related to insulation, it's because the laminate efficiently conducts heat away from the skin

Thanks for your reply. Why do you consider going for laminate is a big mistake?

We had laminate at our previous place throughout and it was perfectly fine IMHO unless I miss something technical.

I've just had Quickstep in my lounge, which replaced another laminate.

The thermal boards in the lounge were in good condition, so they have remained and a Quickstep underlay put over the top. I don't know which one, but it said it was a 3 in 1 on it (moisture/thermal/noise reduction).

I also have laminate in the main bedroom which has just thermal underlay underneath.

Neither the lounge or bedroom are cold on bare feet and not particularly noisy either.

I have laminate in two rooms.
Downstairs has a concrete floor so it has ( I think its called ) waterproof underlay.
Its a silver backed polystyrene kind of stuff. The silver side is on the bottom and the polystyrene on top, then laminate laid on top.
Fairly warm to the feet and not a lot of noise, but the concrete floor may have something to do with that.

Upstairs has just green foam/fibrous type underlay, it is quite thick and again not cold and brilliant for sound suppression. And helped the creaking floor not creak so much.

I'd go for the green fibre-board panels over the foam roll stuff.
  • I have quickstep in my bedroom too. Not cold at all even though there's no heating in there.
  • A big thanks to everyone for helpful replies, green fibre board stuff seems a good choice then. My builder also suggest green fibre board panels from wickes.

A quick word of warning - I don't think Quickstep guarantee their boards unless you use their underlay.
