Utilities and moving house

I am moving soon and was wondering about the date I give to the Utility companies. It is Friday 28th March. When will the service be put in my name at the new house? I aim to move Friday morning and, hopefully, be at the new house by 12 o'clock midday. I don't want to end up paying for someone's gas/electric etc, but I am not sure when the actual transfer of accounts takes place. No one will be moving into my house, it has been bought by a landlord, and the house I am moving to is empty.I have not moved house for years and years so I am not familiar with the system.

You take a meter-reading as you exit your old property. To be on the safe-side, if you can, take a photo of them.

Once you're in the new property also take those meter readings and call up all of the utility suppliers, giving your new address for the final bills to be sent to, and arrange for new accounts to be set up for the supplies at the new address.

You don't want to be charged for any usage in the old property past your move-out date, or for the previous occupant's usage in your new one.

Thankyou. Very helpful. Does this also apply to the phone/broadband? There is no meter reading for that is there? I am with Talk Talk.

Sometimes you have to give a certain length of notice to suppliers so check who needs what and give them your leaving date. Then as the other poster says, read the meters and give them the readings on the day.
