Dog ill after eating something in park

My dog Jack ate something in the park on Thursday evening before I could stop him - he was on lead, too!

He threw up within an hour of getting home and yesterday morning refused his breakfast.

Took him for a walk and he has a serious bout of the trots:(

Managed to give him a tiny bit of boiled chicken about 5pm yesterday which he kept down for an hour then threw it back up again.

Tried him this morning with a bit more boiled chicken and rice which he refused, but did take a bit of boiled chicken from my hand.

I'll see if that stays down. He's drinking ok so I know he's not in any immediate danger but it's the vets on Monday if he's no better.

Anything else I can offer him besides boiled chicken and rice?

Any sort of pasta or a small amount of mashed potato. Tinned punpkin is also good for settling upset tums, of course fresh punkin if you can get it, I just keep a couple of tins in just in case.
Yes I know I am not a Vet but this is the advice we are always given so I take it as read now.
Of course if he isnt drinking then a quick trip to your Vet will soon sort him out.
They are little $%^&'s for picking up what they shouldnt, Ollie will pick up anything that moves. He has a foundness for dried leaves at the moment.
Hope your furkid feels better soon zac's xx
RIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Always in our hearts xxx

You would be better fasting him for a day first then offer the chicken.

He probably won't need an emergency vet but it may be worth a call to one to see what they advise over the phone.

    How is he in himself?

In my experience as long as the only symptoms are vomiting/runs but they're generally ok I don't worry too much.
A day or so not eating won't be a problem as long as they're drinking. I don't "force" them to eat, they let me know when they are ready.

If things haven't cleared up in a day or two then I get them to the "vitnery" as there is a danger of dehydration.

Edit: If mine are still vomiting after 12 hours then it's vet time as even if they are drinking the body won't be absorbing much, if any.
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!

Thanks Chris n tj, Fosterdog, Paradigm and pink princess.

I took him for another walk this morning and he still has the trots like you wouldn't believe.

Our vet is only open till 12 on Saturday and closed Sunday and I'm hoping it doesn't merit a call to the emergency vet.

Jack's ok in himself when outdoors, chasing seagulls etc., but bit droopy indoors.

He had a bit more chicken this morning which has stayed down ...so far...!
  • Rocky gets alot of upset tums, and he is a big scavenger so it is not unusual for him to eat something that sets him off.

I usually starve for 24 hours, then a small meal of scrambled egg, then start on boiled or steamed plain white fish and rice. (he loves fish and it's a great way to get him interested if he is off his food)

I tried pasta once, but it seemed to really bung him up, handy at the time but not when he was straining to go the next day
  • Ohhh poor lamb :( Maisie is terrible at doing that - even if she's on lead, she can see something, lunge & it's gone before I've even seen it!

A couple of things you could try (which I now keep in the doggy 1st aid kit as, with her, I can guarantee there will always be a next time!:() are Prokolin (which she hates) or Diarsanyl Plus (which seemed to go down OK - there's also one for small dogs) and Canikur tablets (she will eat these like a treat :) - also comes in a paste but not tried that)

All are available without prescription so if there's a vets near you open on a Sunday (PAH vets tend to be) you'd be able to pop in & get it without them having to see him / or you be registered there :)

Mine is being drawn to fresh shoots of something. I thought it was Chickweed or the fresh shoots of that sticky weed. Whatever? it made him very sick indeed within 10 minutes of eating it.
I was talking to another dog walker whilst mine was foraging for it, pointing out the weed and he thought parsnip weed? It is tiny with fronds, but the best ever command and I thank Victoria Stillwell is AH Ah!
If nothing else, my boy always leaves on that.

Thanks again. He's a bit brighter tonight. Not remotely interested in food of any kind all day but tonight he had a tiny bit from a tray of Cesar (he doesn't usually have that but I keep some in for his convalescence food) and it did perk him up quite a bit.

In the last hour he's had a bit more, so probably about 100g of it all day and the tiny bit of chicken this morning.

If that all stays down I'll feel a bit easier.

Rising from the ashes, I'll pop into Pets at Home tomorrow, see if they have any of your recommendations.

Like you say, there's always a next time!

No more trots up to now...hope they don't reappear middle of the night!
  • They will be a lot cheaper online so if he's perkier tomorrow & you don't feel you need them for this 'incident' then I'd just pick one & order it in so it's there in case there is another time ......

Her tum settled a lot quicker this time being able to get something into her straight away :)
